4-Oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid

4-Oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid is a quinolone building block associated with ivacaftor synthesis. The carboxyl group supplies the site for amide-bond formation, while the adjacent quinolone carbonyl and ring nitrogen transfer the preassembled heterocyclic framework into downstream compounds. This combination allows side-chain coupling without rebuilding the fused aromatic ring system.

The selected free acid differs from the corresponding ester, acid chloride and completed carboxamide. Activation of its carboxyl function enables connection to a suitable amine, retaining the quinolone portion of the molecule.
