N-Ethyl-2-(4-formylphenyl)acetamide

N-Ethyl-2-(4-formylphenyl)acetamide is an aromatic aldehyde carrying a preinstalled N-ethylacetamide side chain. The formyl group supports formation of a benzyl–nitrogen linkage, while the amide supplies a precursor to an N-ethylaminoethyl substituent after carbonyl reduction. These two functions allow different portions of an aminoethyl-substituted aromatic fragment to be developed in stages.

The selected material retains the amide carbonyl, distinguishing it from the corresponding aminoethyl benzaldehyde. Its aldehyde can connect the aromatic ring to a complementary amine before the side-chain oxidation state is changed. Protection or prior conversion of the aldehyde separates its chemistry from amide reduction. This makes the intermediate relevant to routes in which benzyl attachment and terminal amine preparation occur at different points.
