Salcaprozic acid is 8-(2-hydroxybenzamido)octanoic acid, the free-acid counterpart of salcaprozate sodium. Its terminal carboxyl group enables salt formation and acid-derived modification, while the salicylamide portion supplies the aromatic amide and phenolic functions of the delivery-agent framework. The hydrocarbon chain links these polar regions within one molecule.
The selected material is an isolated synthetic acid for downstream conversion, rather than the sodium-carboxylate excipient itself. Neutralization provides access to salcaprozate sodium, with the appropriate changes in formula weight and ionization state. The free acid also offers a direct starting point for ester derivatives or comparisons of acid and salt behavior during process development. The terminal acid can be modified independently of the existing aromatic amide linkage.
