Silica matting agent

Silica matting agents are controlled-particle amorphous silicas used to reduce coating gloss. Particles create microscopic surface irregularity as the film forms, scattering reflected light and lowering specular reflection. Their porous structure and interaction with the binder can also influence rheology, surface feel and the appearance of the finished coating.

The selected powder is an untreated precipitated-silica matting grade rather than fumed silica chosen primarily for thickening. Its particle size and pore structure are designed around surface texture and optical response. It is dispersed into the coating without dissolving, and its effectiveness depends on film thickness, binder shrinkage and the surrounding formulation. A matting powder changes surface reflection; it is not simply a white pigment for hiding power.

Typical Applications

• Wood clearcoats: Used in compatible varnishes and clear finishes to produce satin or matte appearance while retaining visibility of the substrate.
• Industrial pigmented coatings: Used to control gloss in protective and decorative coatings for metal or other suitable substrates.
• Coatings for plastic and leather-like surfaces: Used in appropriate binders where low gloss and controlled surface feel are part of the desired finish.
