Polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate

Polymeric MDI is an aromatic isocyanate mixture containing methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and higher-functionality homologues. Its NCO groups react with polyols to form polyurethane networks, while reaction with water can generate urea linkages and carbon dioxide. The mixture’s functionality supports rigid, highly connected structures and strong binding in appropriate industrial systems.

The selected material is general-purpose liquid PMDI, not pure monomeric MDI or a formulated polyol blend. It is used as the isocyanate component in foam manufacture and as a reactive binder in wood composites. In foams, catalysts, blowing systems and polyol structure establish cell development and rigidity. In wood products, the chemistry develops bonding within the lignocellulosic assembly during pressing.

Typical Applications

• Rigid polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams: Used as the isocyanate feedstock in formulated insulation-foam systems for boards, panels and other suitable constructions.
• Engineered-wood binders: Used as a reactive binder in suitable oriented-strand board, particleboard and related wood-composite manufacturing processes.
• Polyurethane adhesive and binder systems: Used in compatible moisture-reactive or two-component formulations where aromatic isocyanate chemistry develops the required bonded network.
