Zinc borate hydrate (ZB-2335)

Zinc borate ZB-2335 is a hydrated inorganic additive represented commercially as 2ZnO·3B2O3·3.5H2O. It contributes to flame-retardant systems through heat absorption during water release and formation of borate-containing protective residues. Depending on the polymer package, it can also assist smoke suppression and improve the integrity of the barrier formed during burning.

The selected powder is the hydrated 2335 type rather than an anhydrous or higher-temperature zinc borate grade. It is dispersed into the polymer as a particulate additive and commonly works alongside other flame retardants. Its useful mechanisms and processing window depend on the surrounding resin chemistry. It is therefore a synergist or multifunctional inorganic component, not an assurance that any host polymer will meet a particular fire rating.

Typical Applications

• Flame-retardant PVC cable compounds: Used with suitable stabilizer and flame-retardant systems where smoke reduction and improved fire response are required.
• Halogen-containing polymer formulations: Used as a synergistic inorganic component in appropriately designed flame-retardant packages.
• Halogen-free polymer composites: Used with compatible char-forming or mineral systems to support protective-residue formation and fire-response development.
