1,2,3,4-Tetrahydronaphthalene-1-carboxylic acid

1,2,3,4-Tetrahydronaphthalene-1-carboxylic acid is a racemic bicyclic acid used in acyl-fragment synthesis and production of resolved tetralin intermediates. The carboxyl group enables ester and amide formation, while the stereogenic ring carbon permits separation into the corresponding R and S acids. Its tetralin framework combines an aromatic ring with a saturated fused ring.

The selected material is unresolved rather than a specified single enantiomer. It can supply racemic derivatives when stereochemistry is not controlled at that stage, or serve as the feedstock for diastereomeric salt resolution. Acid activation introduces the tetralin carbonyl fragment into larger structures, whereas separation of the acid enantiomers establishes a defined starting configuration before subsequent coupling.
