5,6-Dichloronicotinic acid

5,6-Dichloronicotinic acid is a halogenated pyridinecarboxylic acid with separate ring-substitution and acyl-coupling handles. The carboxyl group forms amides or esters, while the chlorinated pyridine positions allow further functionalization. Its ring nitrogen and adjacent chlorine substitution pattern distinguish it from dichlorobenzoic acids with otherwise similar acid chemistry.

The selected free acid is an early building block for substituted nicotinic-acid derivatives. Reported iodine-displacement chemistry converts one chlorine into an iodine handle, giving access to a different coupling pattern while preserving the remaining chlorine. Alternatively, carboxyl activation connects the pyridyl fragment to amines.
