The biapenem side-chain intermediate is a thiol-bearing pyrazolotriazolium chloride used to construct the antibiotic’s sulfur-linked substituent. Its thiol supplies the nucleophilic attachment site for an activated carbapenem nucleus, while the fused triazolium system transfers the cationic heterocyclic fragment. These structural features establish both the linkage and the charged side-chain architecture required downstream.

The selected material is the chloride of the side-chain cation, supplied before attachment to the beta-lactam core. The ionic ring system and reactive sulfur have different roles in synthesis: the former is retained as a structural fragment, while the latter forms the new carbon–sulfur bond. Subsequent core deprotection and product isolation complete the biapenem route.
