Azelaic acid

Azelaic acid is a saturated C9 dicarboxylic acid used in cosmetic products for blemish-prone skin and uneven-looking tone. Its effects on keratinization and pigment-related pathways support these two formulation directions. The ingredient is supplied as a powder, with micronized grades selected to improve particle distribution and reduce gritty feel when the active remains dispersed rather than fully dissolved.

Free azelaic acid has limited solubility in water, which makes dispersion quality and vehicle design central to its incorporation. It differs from water-soluble azeloyl derivatives and salts, whose handling and active identity are different. The cosmetic powder is used in suspensions, emulsions and suitably solubilized systems; the finished product establishes the delivery profile and skin-care positioning.

Typical Applications

• Blemish-prone skin creams: Used in facial emulsions designed to improve the appearance of uneven texture and blemish-prone skin. Micronized particles can be dispersed through the cream vehicle to produce a uniform application film.
• Tone-evening facial treatments: Used in serums and creams targeting visible post-blemish marks and uneven tone. The formulation carries the free acid in a dispersed or suitably solubilized form rather than substituting an azelaic-acid salt.
