Behentrimonium methosulfate and cetearyl alcohol conditioning wax

Behentrimonium methosulfate is a cationic conditioning surfactant whose long C22 chain promotes adsorption and lubricity on hair. In a common commercial conditioning-wax format, it is combined with cetearyl alcohol. The quaternary ammonium component supports detangling and reduction of static, while the fatty-alcohol carrier supplies body and helps structure the emulsion.

This solid wax blend is used in heated conditioning-emulsion manufacture. It is different from concentrated behentrimonium methosulfate supplied without the fatty-alcohol carrier, and the blend’s full addition level is not the same as its cationic-active level. Despite the methosulfate counterion in its name, it is a conditioning quaternary ammonium ingredient rather than an anionic sulfate cleansing surfactant.

Typical Applications

• Rinse-off hair conditioners: Used as a combined conditioning and emulsifying base in cream conditioners. The cationic component deposits on hair to improve combing, while the wax structure supports a uniform creamy product.
• Hair masks and intensive treatments: Used in richer conditioning emulsions containing oils or additional emollients. It contributes slip and detangling while helping build the substantial texture expected in a hair mask.
• Leave-in conditioning creams: Used in appropriately balanced leave-on hair emulsions for manageability and static control. The blend provides a cationic emulsion framework into which other conditioning ingredients can be incorporated.
