Benzophenone-3

Benzophenone-3, also known as oxybenzone, is an oil-soluble organic ultraviolet absorber supplied as a pale crystalline powder. It absorbs UVB and part of the UVA range and dissipates absorbed energy through non-radiative processes. In cosmetic formulation it can contribute to the UV-filter system and help protect light-sensitive formulation components from ultraviolet exposure.

The powder is incorporated through a compatible oil or solvent phase rather than dissolved directly in water. Solubility in the selected vehicle controls whether it remains uniformly distributed or recrystallizes during cooling and storage. Benzophenone-3 is one component of a complete UV-protection system; the finished formulation establishes the absorption profile and measured sun-protection performance.

Typical Applications

• Oil-phase UV-filter systems: Used in sunscreen lotions and creams as part of a combination of ultraviolet absorbers. The dissolved ingredient contributes UV absorption within the emulsion film, alongside filters selected to complete the required spectral coverage.
• Protection of light-sensitive formulations: Used as a formulation UV absorber in compatible cosmetic systems containing ingredients prone to light-induced change. It reduces the ultraviolet energy reaching susceptible components inside the product.
