Dioctyl terephthalate is a terephthalate ester plasticizer used to make PVC flexible. It reduces interactions between polymer chains, lowering stiffness and improving the ability of the compound to bend and deform. Its compatibility with PVC also supports processing into flexible extrusions, sheets and plastisol-based products.
The selected liquid is bis(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate, commonly called DOTP or DEHT. Its para-substituted terephthalate structure differs from ortho-phthalate plasticizers even though it performs a similar plasticizing role. It is incorporated with PVC resin, stabilizers and other ingredients to establish softness, fusion and retention. In suitable plastisols, it can support low initial viscosity and stable viscosity during storage.
Typical Applications
Flexible PVC cable compounds: Used to impart flexibility and assist processing in suitably formulated wire and cable insulation or jacketing.
PVC flooring and coated fabrics: Used in appropriate flexible compounds or plastisols to develop softness, drape and processing consistency.
Flexible profiles and sheets: Used in extruded or calendered PVC products where a general-purpose terephthalate plasticizer is required.
