Calcium lignosulfonate

Calcium lignosulfonate is a water-soluble, lignin-derived anionic polymer used as a dispersant and binder. Its sulfonated structure helps distribute mineral particles in water, while the larger organic framework can bind fine solids together during drying. These functions support conventional concrete water reduction and the agglomeration of industrial powders.

The selected powder is a technical lignosulfonate rather than a high-range synthetic superplasticizer. In cement systems, it can improve workability and retard setting, with the response influenced by the lignosulfonate composition and cement chemistry. In granular products, binding develops as water is removed and solid bridges form between particles. The calcium counterion and variable lignin-derived structure distinguish it from a single, precisely defined small molecule.

• Concrete and mortar admixtures: Used in conventional water-reducing and set-retarding admixture formulations to improve workability and extend the handling period of suitable cement mixes.
• Mineral and industrial pellet binding: Used to agglomerate fine mineral or industrial powders, increasing green-pellet cohesion and helping dried granules withstand handling.
• Dust-control formulations: Used in aqueous treatments that bind loose fines on suitable unpaved or stockpiled mineral surfaces and reduce their tendency to become airborne.
