Hydroxyethyl cellulose (high viscosity)

Hydroxyethyl cellulose is a nonionic, water-soluble cellulose ether used to thicken and stabilize aqueous formulations. Hydrated polymer chains increase viscosity and help suspend pigments and extenders. Water retention and control of flow also support application consistency in waterborne coatings.

The selected powder is conventional high-viscosity HEC, not a hydrophobically modified associative thickener. It mainly builds viscosity in the water phase, which influences storage stability, brush loading and resistance to settling. Hydration develops the thickening effect after incorporation. Binder chemistry, surfactants and other rheology modifiers can then be used to adjust leveling and application response beyond the contribution of HEC alone.

Typical Applications

• Waterborne architectural paints: Used to develop viscosity, maintain pigment suspension and provide consistent handling during brushing or rolling.
• Textured coatings and aqueous fillers: Used to hold mineral solids in suspension and maintain body in formulations containing substantial filler or extender loading.
• Water-based coating concentrates: Used to stabilize suitable aqueous pigment or formulation concentrates against settling while providing manageable flow behavior.
