Methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride

Methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride is a liquid cycloaliphatic anhydride used to cure epoxy resins. Its anhydride functionality reacts in a suitable catalyzed system with epoxy groups to form an ester-containing crosslinked network. The liquid form also helps produce manageable resin-hardener mixtures for casting, impregnation and composite processing.

The selected product is commercial MTHPA, normally supplied as an isomeric mixture rather than one pure stereoisomer. It is a heat-curing hardener whose reaction profile is established with the epoxy, accelerator and cure schedule. Its low-viscosity contribution assists wetting and filling, while the cured network provides the rigidity and electrical-insulation properties required by suitable applications. It is distinct from fully hydrogenated MHHPA.

Typical Applications

• Electrical casting and encapsulation: Used with suitable epoxy resins in heat-cured compounds for cast electrical parts, encapsulation and insulating components.
• Fiber-reinforced epoxy composites: Used as an anhydride hardener in appropriate winding, pultrusion or impregnation systems where flow and network formation must be balanced.
• Industrial epoxy castings: Used in formulated resin systems for rigid cast components that require controlled thermal curing.
