Polyamide epichlorohydrin resin solution (12.5% solids)

Polyamide-epichlorohydrin resin is a cationic wet-strength additive used in papermaking. Its positive charge promotes retention on anionic fiber surfaces, while reactive groups develop a crosslinked structure during drying and curing. This helps fiber bonds retain strength after wetting, when ordinary hydrogen-bonded paper loses much of its integrity.

The selected material is a dilute aqueous PAE resin at nominal solids near 12.5%. It is added through the wet-end system and develops its main effect in the dried sheet. Wet-strength reinforcement differs from hydrophobic sizing: the resin supports sheet integrity in water rather than simply preventing initial water penetration. Furnish chemistry, retention and cure development determine the strength delivered by the final paper.

Typical Applications

• Tissue and paper towels: Used where the paper must maintain sufficient integrity during wiping or other wet handling.
• Wet-strength packaging papers: Used in suitable bags, wrapping and other paper grades that must resist loss of strength after exposure to moisture.
• Specialty wet-laid papers: Used in appropriate filter or technical paper formulations where a fiber network needs strength after saturation.
