Polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride solution (20% aqueous)

Polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride, abbreviated PHMB, is a cationic polymeric antimicrobial supplied commercially as an aqueous concentrate. Its positively charged biguanide groups interact with microbial cell surfaces and membranes, supporting bactericidal activity. The polymeric structure also provides adsorption to suitable negatively charged substrates, which is relevant to formulated surface and fabric treatment systems.

The 20% aqueous grade is a raw material for industrial biocidal and hygiene formulations. It offers low-foam antimicrobial activity in compatible water-based systems. As a cationic polymer, it can interact with anionic surfactants and other negatively charged formulation ingredients. This industrial concentrate is distinct from medical-use solutions, contact-lens products and finished disinfectants with established use claims.

Typical Applications

• Formulated surface hygiene products: Used as an antimicrobial active in compatible surface-care formulations. The finished product establishes the carrier system and delivery format for treatment of designated hard surfaces.
• Fabric-treatment formulations: Used in selected antimicrobial textile and fabric-care systems where adsorption of the cationic polymer contributes to delivery on the substrate. It is incorporated as an active component rather than supplied as a complete finishing bath.
• Industrial aqueous product protection: Used in compatible industrial formulations requiring control of bacterial contamination. The concentrate provides the antimicrobial ingredient while the remainder of the formulation determines distribution and compatibility.
