Chemical Product Description & Applications

6PPD is a substituted p-phenylenediamine used as an antiozonant and antioxidant in diene rubbers. It reacts with ozone near exposed rubber surfaces and interrupts oxidation reactions, helping limit surface cracking and oxidative deterioration. Its ability to protect rubber under repeated deformation makes it particularly relevant to tires and other dynamic products.

The selected granular additive is incorporated during rubber compounding. Surface protection depends partly on migration through the rubber and replenishment of material consumed by exposure. It is commonly combined with protective waxes and other stabilizers to address static and dynamic conditions. Because this amine additive can stain and discolor, its established applications are mainly dark rubber compounds rather than light-colored articles requiring appearance stability.

Typical Applications

  • Tire sidewall and tread compounds: Used in natural-rubber and synthetic-diene blends to help resist ozone cracking and oxidative damage during flexing and outdoor service.
  • Conveyor and transmission belts: Used in dark rubber compounds exposed to repeated bending, air and heat, supporting retention of service properties.
  • Industrial hoses and dynamic rubber parts: Used in suitable diene-rubber formulations where surface cracking and oxidation contribute to deterioration during movement or outdoor exposure.
