Thermoplastic polyurethane (polyester type, 85A)

Thermoplastic polyurethane combines flexible polymer segments with harder urethane-rich domains. This segmented structure provides elastic recovery together with abrasion resistance and mechanical strength. Unlike a permanently crosslinked polyurethane thermoset, TPU can soften during heating and be shaped by suitable thermoplastic processing methods.

The selected material is a polyester-based TPU pellet grade in the approximately Shore 85A class. It offers a practical balance of flexibility, wear resistance and resistance to many oils for molded or extruded technical parts. The polyester chemistry differs from polyether TPU in its response to prolonged moisture exposure. Compound formulation and processing establish the finished article’s dimensions, surface quality and service performance.

Typical Applications

• Abrasion-resistant molded parts: Used in suitable wheels, rollers, protective components and other injection-molded articles that require a resilient, wear-resistant polymer.
• Industrial tubing and profiles: Used in appropriate extrusion grades for flexible technical profiles and tubing where elastic recovery and mechanical durability are needed.
• Footwear and flexible technical components: Used in molded parts that combine elastomeric behavior with the handling and shaping advantages of thermoplastic pellets.
