Tolyltriazole

Tolyltriazole is a methyl-substituted benzotriazole used to inhibit corrosion of copper and copper alloys. It interacts with the metal surface to form a protective interfacial film, limiting contact with corrosive species and reducing copper dissolution. Lower dissolved-copper levels can also help protect other metals from copper-related galvanic effects in mixed-metal systems.

The selected material is solid tolyltriazole, commonly supplied as a commercial mixture of methylbenzotriazole isomers. It is incorporated into formulated water treatments, coolants or metalworking products through a suitable dissolution route. Its principal role is yellow-metal protection; ferrous and aluminum components generally require complementary inhibitors. The protective film must be maintained within the chemistry and operating conditions of the finished fluid.

Typical Applications

• Recirculating cooling-water treatments: Used as the copper-alloy inhibitor in programs serving heat exchangers, condensers and other equipment containing brass or copper components.
• Antifreeze and industrial coolants: Used in mixed-metal inhibitor packages to protect copper-containing parts while other additives address the remaining metals.
• Metalworking-fluid concentrates: Used in compatible machining and metal-treatment fluids to limit staining and corrosion of copper and brass workpieces.
