3-Amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole

3-Amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole is an aminated fused-indole intermediate with two chemically distinct nitrogen sites. The exocyclic primary amine supports acylation and sulfonylation, while the indole nitrogen allows attachment of alkyl or other substituents. The material therefore provides both a ring-system building block and separate handles for installing side chains.

The selected version is racemic rather than an isolated R or S enantiomer. It is relevant before chiral resolution or when racemic analogues are required for synthetic investigation. Resolution can separate the stereochemical component of a process from the subsequent nitrogen-functionalization chemistry. Its acetylated, sulfonylated and N-alkylated derivatives occupy different stages in tetrahydrocarbazole synthesis and should not be treated as identical forms.
