1-Naphthoic acid is a fused-aromatic carboxylic acid used as an acyl-fragment building block and as a substrate for annulation chemistry. Its carboxyl group forms esters and amides, while its position on the naphthalene ring enables directed ring-forming transformations. The molecule supplies a rigid aromatic unit together with a chemically accessible carbonyl function.

The 1-position distinguishes it from 2-naphthoic acid, leading to different geometry and reactivity in downstream structures.
