Methyl 2-oxoindoline-6-carboxylate

Methyl oxindole-6-carboxylate is an oxindole building block with a reactive C3 methylene and an aromatic methyl ester. The C3 position supports condensation to substituted alkene intermediates, while the ester preserves a carboxyl-derived function for later conversion. The lactam nitrogen offers a separate site for protection or substitution during construction of more complex oxindole structures.

The selected compound has an unprotected lactam NH, distinguishing it from its N-acetyl derivative. It is used in nintedanib-related synthetic chemistry and can also enter transformations of the oxindole ring itself. The preinstalled 6-carboxylate fixes the aromatic substitution position, allowing later steps to modify the carbonyl-adjacent carbon or ring nitrogen without rebuilding that substitution pattern.
