Chemical Product Description & Applications

3-Bromo-4-fluorobenzaldehyde is a halogenated aromatic building block with independent aldehyde and aryl-bromide reaction sites. The formyl group supports imine formation and reductive amination, while the bromine enables coupling to carbon-containing fragments. The fluorine substituent establishes an additional aromatic substitution feature that is retained in many downstream structures.

The selected aldehyde offers a carbonyl handle directly, distinguishing it from the corresponding benzyl alcohol or benzoic acid. Carbonyl condensation can introduce nitrogen-containing side chains, whereas catalytic coupling extends the aromatic framework at the brominated position. These operations can be staged with appropriate carbonyl protection, giving access to different structures from the same bromo-fluoro substitution pattern.

Typical Applications

  • Schiff-base intermediates: Used in condensation with aromatic amines to prepare imines, including reported reactions with nitro- and chloro-substituted anilines that introduce the halogenated benzylidene group.
  • Fluorinated biaryl intermediates: Used as the aryl-bromide component in carbon–carbon coupling, attaching a carbon fragment while the aldehyde is retained or temporarily protected.
  • Substituted benzylamine intermediates: Used in reductive amination with suitable amines to convert the aldehyde into a benzyl–nitrogen linkage while retaining the aromatic halogen pattern.
