Vinyltrimethoxysilane

Vinyltrimethoxysilane is an organofunctional silane containing a vinyl group and three hydrolyzable methoxy groups. Its vinyl group supports radical grafting or copolymerization, while hydrolysis and condensation of the silane groups create siloxane connections. This combination links organic-polymer chemistry with moisture-curable or inorganic-surface chemistry.

The selected liquid is the unhydrolyzed silane raw material. In polyethylene, grafted silane groups can form a network during a later moisture-curing stage. On mineral surfaces, hydrolyzed silane groups can condense with suitable surface hydroxyls, while the vinyl group offers an organic reaction site. This allows silane functionality to be introduced either into a polymer chain or at an inorganic interface.

Typical Applications

• Moisture-crosslinked polyethylene cable compounds: Used in silane-grafting routes for polyethylene insulation and jacketing compounds that are subsequently crosslinked by moisture.
• Silane-crosslinked polyethylene pipes: Used as a graftable crosslinking precursor in appropriate PEX-b manufacturing systems.
• Mineral-filler surface treatment: Used to modify suitable silica or hydroxyl-bearing filler surfaces for incorporation into compatible, reactively formulated polymer systems.
