Vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (5000 cSt)

Vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane is a reactive silicone polymer used as a base for addition-cure elastomers. Its terminal vinyl groups react with Si-H-functional crosslinkers through catalyzed hydrosilylation, forming an elastic silicone network. The flexible siloxane backbone provides the low-temperature flexibility and temperature-tolerant character associated with silicone materials.

The selected material is an approximately 5,000 cSt vinyl-terminated fluid, not inert trimethyl-terminated silicone oil. Its end groups supply the connection points for cure, while polymer chain length contributes to viscosity and the network structure. Fillers, crosslinkers, catalysts and other ingredients are added separately to create the finished compound. The base oil alone is therefore a reactive formulation component rather than a ready-to-use silicone rubber.

Typical Applications

• Addition-cure moldmaking silicones: Used as the vinyl-functional base polymer in formulated two-component systems for flexible molds and replicas.
• Silicone encapsulation and potting compounds: Used in suitable addition-cure formulations where a flexible silicone matrix surrounds electrical or other components.
• Silicone gels and elastomer formulations: Used with matched Si-H crosslinkers and formulation ingredients to develop the desired cured-network softness and elasticity.
