Styrene acrylic emulsion (50% solids)

Styrene-acrylic emulsion is a waterborne copolymer dispersion used as a film-forming binder. As water leaves a properly formulated coating, polymer particles coalesce and bind pigments and extenders into a continuous film. Styrene and acrylic monomer balance provides a route to adjusting hardness, flexibility, water resistance and adhesion.

The selected product is a general architectural-coating binder with nominal solids near 50%. It is a dispersion of polymer particles rather than a water-soluble resin. Pigment volume, coalescent choice and the other formulation ingredients determine how the film develops and performs. The styrene component favors hardness and water resistance, while softer acrylic comonomers help balance film formation and flexibility.

Typical Applications

• Interior and exterior wall paints: Used as the principal polymer binder in appropriately formulated waterborne architectural coatings, holding pigments and fillers in the dry film.
• Masonry primers and sealers: Used in compatible primer formulations to bind surface particles and provide a coherent base for subsequent coating layers.
• Textured architectural coatings: Used as the polymeric binding phase in suitable mineral-filled decorative or textured finishes.
