Chemical Product Description & Applications

Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is a thermoplastic binder combining polyethylene-like segments with polar vinyl-acetate units. The acetate units reduce crystallinity and increase flexibility and compatibility with suitable tackifier resins. On heating, the polymer flows; on cooling, it develops cohesive strength without requiring a chemical curing reaction.

The selected material is a high-flow, hot-melt-adhesive grade with nominal vinyl-acetate content near 28%. It is a pelletized melt-processable resin, distinct from redispersible VAE construction powder or an aqueous latex. Tackifiers and waxes adjust wetting, open time and melt viscosity, while EVA supplies much of the adhesive film’s strength. Vinyl-acetate content and molecular weight jointly influence this balance.

Typical Applications

  • Packaging hot-melt adhesives: Used as a base polymer in suitably formulated case, carton and other packaging adhesives applied from the melt.
  • Bookbinding and paper-converting adhesives: Used with compatible tackifiers and waxes to develop the required balance of wetting, setting speed and cohesive strength.
  • Industrial hot-melt bonding compounds: Used in compatible thermoplastic adhesive blends for assembly or lamination of appropriate substrates.
