Sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate

Sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate is an anionic surfactant used for cleansing and dense, creamy foam in personal-care products. Its lauroyl group associates with oily soil, while the isethionate-derived sulfonate group provides affinity for water. It is a sulfate-free surfactant in the chemical sense: the anionic group is a sulfonate rather than a sulfate ester.

The solid flake grade is particularly relevant to low-water cleansing formulations. It can also be incorporated into liquid surfactant systems through an appropriate dissolution and processing sequence. It contributes the primary cleansing and foam structure, while co-surfactants, binders and conditioning ingredients establish the final texture and wash feel. It is distinct from sodium cocoyl isethionate in both acyl distribution and head-group structure.

Typical Applications

• Syndet cleansing bars: Used as a main surfactant in facial and body cleansing bars made without a conventional soap base. It supplies lather and detergency while the bar structure is developed using compatible binders and solid ingredients.
• Solid shampoo manufacture: Used in shampoo bars to provide cleansing and foam in a compact, low-water format. Conditioning agents and additional surfactants are incorporated separately to establish the hair feel and bar performance.
• Liquid sulfate-free cleansers: Used in blended face washes and body washes where an isethionate surfactant is selected for creamy foam. Processing converts the solid feedstock into a uniform aqueous surfactant system.
