Squalane

Squalane is a fully saturated hydrocarbon emollient used to soften skin, improve spreading and reduce a dry after-feel in cosmetics. Its nonpolar structure gives good compatibility with cosmetic oils and lipophilic ingredients. The absence of double bonds makes it more resistant to oxidation than squalene, the unsaturated compound from which it can be produced.

The plant-derived cosmetic grade is a clear, mobile oil-phase ingredient. It contributes lubrication and a smooth skin feel without functioning as a water-binding humectant. It can also act as a carrier for oil-soluble ingredients in anhydrous or emulsified products. Its compatibility with cosmetic oils supports blending into both light emollient mixtures and richer oil phases.

Typical Applications

• Facial oils and oil-based serums: Used as an emollient base or blending oil in anhydrous facial products. It provides spreadability and carries compatible lipophilic ingredients in a low-polarity vehicle.
• Moisturizing creams and lotions: Used in the oil phase of face, body and hand-care emulsions to improve softness and glide. The emulsion’s aqueous phase supplies the separate humectant contribution.
• Lip and color-cosmetic products: Used in suitable lip formulations and color cosmetics to improve lubrication and pigment-vehicle feel. Its oxidative stability is useful in oil-rich products containing fragrance or other oxidation-sensitive ingredients.
