Glacial acrylic acid (stabilized)

Glacial acrylic acid is a concentrated unsaturated carboxylic-acid monomer used in polymer and acrylate-ester manufacture. The vinyl group participates in polymerization, while the carboxyl group provides acidity, neutralization capacity and sites for further chemical conversion. These two reactive functions support production of water-absorbing polymers, dispersants and a broad range of acrylic materials.

The commercial monomer is supplied with a stabilizing inhibitor for storage and handling. It is a reactive feedstock that becomes part of downstream products, rather than a ready-made thickener or water-treatment formulation. Partial or full neutralization changes the ionic character of acrylic polymers, while esterification converts the acid into acrylate monomers with different flexibility and application profiles.

Typical Applications

• Superabsorbent polymer manufacture: Used to produce crosslinked polyacrylate absorbents for hygiene and related applications. The acrylic-acid-derived polymer network supplies the water-swelling functionality of the final material.
• Water-soluble acrylic polymers: Used in manufacture of polyacrylic acids and copolymers for dispersing, thickening and water-treatment functions. The retained carboxyl groups provide charge and interaction with dissolved ions after neutralization.
• Acrylate ester production: Used as the acid feedstock for acrylate monomers made with selected alcohols. These monomers are subsequently used in coatings, adhesives and polymer dispersions with properties set by the ester structure.
