Calcium chloride dihydrate

Calcium chloride dihydrate is a hygroscopic, water-soluble calcium salt supplied in crystalline or flake form. It lowers the freezing point of water and attracts moisture from the surrounding environment. Dissolution releases heat, which contributes to its usefulness in deicing systems and preparation of concentrated brines.

The dihydrate contains water of crystallization and therefore has a lower calcium chloride mass fraction than anhydrous grades. It is used as a dissolving salt or a moisture-attracting solid rather than as an insoluble filler. Brine density and freezing behavior depend on dissolved concentration, while the chloride content is a significant feature of the resulting process fluid.

Typical Applications

• Road and site deicing: Used in formulated winter-maintenance materials to help melt ice and maintain liquid brine at sub-zero temperatures. The hygroscopic salt can also contribute to prewetting and brine-based treatment systems.
• Unpaved-road dust control: Used to retain moisture in road surfaces and reduce the release of fine dust. The dissolved salt attracts water and helps maintain a damp surface layer under suitable conditions.
• Industrial brine preparation: Used to make calcium chloride solutions for refrigeration, process and other technical brine applications. The solid dihydrate provides a concentrated, readily dissolving feedstock for the required liquid composition.
