Chemical Product Description & Applications
Rutile titanium dioxide is a high-refractive-index white pigment used to provide opacity, brightness and tinting strength in coatings. Its particles scatter visible light strongly, allowing a coating film to hide the underlying substrate. Surface treatments on commercial pigment grades improve dispersion and help limit undesirable interactions between the pigment surface and the surrounding binder.
The selected grade is a conventional pigmentary powder for coating manufacture. It differs from photocatalytic anatase products and from ultrafine cosmetic UV-filter grades in particle design and intended function. Pigment dispersion establishes how effectively the particles scatter light, while the surface-treatment package affects wetting and binder compatibility. The powder supplies optical performance rather than replacing the coating’s film-forming resin.
Typical Applications
- Architectural white and pastel paints: Used as the main opacity pigment in interior and exterior emulsion paints. It provides hiding and brightness, allowing the film to cover the wall color beneath it.
- Industrial protective coatings: Used in compatible liquid coating systems for white color and tinting strength. Proper dispersion distributes the pigment through the binder and supports uniform appearance of the applied film.
- Powder coating manufacture: Used as a white pigment in resin-based powder coatings. Melt compounding distributes the particles through the powder formulation before application and curing.
