Barium sulfate

Precipitated barium sulfate, often called blanc fixe, is a fine white inorganic filler used in coatings and polymers. Its low solubility and chemical inertness support resistance to water and many chemical environments. Fine, controlled particles contribute pigment spacing, surface smoothness and gloss development, while the material’s high density can also influence the mass and feel of the filled product.

The precipitated grade differs from ground natural barite in its production route and particle characteristics. It is used as an extender and functional filler rather than as the main high-opacity white pigment. Dispersion into the resin or binder phase establishes its effect on finish and rheology. Industrial filler-grade barium sulfate is a separate commercial category from medical imaging preparations.

Typical Applications

• High-gloss coating formulations: Used as an extender in industrial and decorative coatings where a fine filler is needed without excessive disruption of surface gloss. Its particles can assist distribution of the principal pigment in the binder.
• Powder coatings: Used as a chemically inert mineral filler in powder coating compositions. It contributes formulation bulk, density and surface characteristics while being dispersed through the resin during compounding.
• Plastic compounds: Used in thermoplastic and other polymer formulations to adjust density, surface finish and filler content. Its white color and inertness make it suitable for applications where a dark or reactive mineral would interfere with the compound.
