Sodium chloride

Sodium chloride is a soluble inorganic salt used as a chloride feedstock and for preparation of industrial brines. It supplies sodium and chloride ions in water and provides electrolyte strength for chemical and process applications. In chlor-alkali manufacture, purified brine is converted into chlorine, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen through electrolysis.

The refined dry grade offers a controlled salt input for dissolution and further brine treatment. Calcium, magnesium and insoluble matter are relevant to downstream purification, especially for membrane electrolysis. The supplied crystal size and compaction format also affect handling and dissolution. The dry salt can be weighed and dissolved to prepare brines of the required concentration before further purification or use.

Typical Applications

• Chlor-alkali brine production: Used as the sodium chloride feedstock for brine preparation upstream of electrolysis. Dissolution and purification produce the liquid feed required by the selected cell process.
• Ion-exchange resin regeneration: Used to prepare brine for regeneration of suitable sodium-cycle water-softening resins. Sodium ions restore exchange capacity after the resin has accumulated hardness ions.
• Industrial process brines: Used where a defined aqueous electrolyte or chloride-containing process liquid is required. The salt is dissolved to establish the required ionic concentration for the operation.
