Zinc oxide

Zinc oxide is an inorganic zinc compound used as a vulcanization activator, ceramic raw material and reactive zinc source. In sulfur-cured rubber, it participates in the accelerator-activation system that develops the crosslinked network. In glass and ceramics, its oxide contribution can modify melting behavior and the resulting fired properties.

The indirect, or French-process, grade is made by oxidation of zinc vapor and is supplied as a fine white powder. It is dispersed into rubber or introduced into ceramic batches according to the process. Conventional industrial zinc oxide differs from ultrafine cosmetic UV-filter materials in particle design and intended use. Its activity and dispersion in a compound depend on the selected powder characteristics and the other ingredients.

Typical Applications

• Rubber compounding: Used in tires, industrial rubber goods and other suitable sulfur-cured compounds as part of the cure activation package. It works with fatty acids and accelerators to support vulcanization.
• Ceramic frits and glazes: Used as an oxide raw material in selected ceramic recipes. It contributes to melting behavior, surface development and properties established during firing.
• Zinc chemical manufacture: Used as a reactive zinc source for zinc salts and related products. Chemical conversion allows the oxide feedstock to supply zinc in a different functional form.
