Manganese carbonate

Manganese carbonate is an inorganic manganese(II) compound supplied as a pale pink to light-colored powder. It provides a solid manganese source for chemical conversion and develops manganese oxides during thermal processing. In ceramic systems, the manganese contribution can modify color and participate in the fired composition, making it useful as more than a simple inert filler.

The carbonate is sparingly soluble in water but reacts with acids to form manganese salts. Heating releases carbon dioxide as the solid converts toward oxide-containing products. These behaviors support wet-chemical manufacture and fired-material processing through different routes. The technical powder provides a manganese-bearing feed that can be weighed and distributed through a mineral batch before conversion.

Typical Applications

• Ceramic glazes and pigments: Used as a manganese-bearing raw material in ceramic color and glaze formulations. The fired color develops through interactions among manganese, the glaze composition and the firing atmosphere.
• Manganese salt manufacture: Used as a carbonate feedstock for production of soluble manganese salts through chemical conversion. It supplies manganese in a manageable solid form for the downstream process.
• Manganese-containing oxide materials: Used as a precursor in preparation of selected mixed oxides, including ferrite-related materials. Thermal processing converts the carbonate and incorporates manganese into the designed oxide composition.
