Sodium silicate solution

Sodium silicate solution, commonly called liquid water glass, is an alkaline inorganic material containing dissolved silicate species. It contributes alkalinity to cleaning systems and forms an inorganic binding phase as water is removed or the silicate is chemically set. The dissolved silica content also makes it a feedstock for precipitated silica and other silicate-derived products.

Commercial liquid grades vary in silica-to-sodium-oxide ratio and solids content. These attributes affect viscosity, alkalinity and setting behavior, so the material is not one fixed-stoichiometry molecular solution. The selected technical liquid is used directly as a water-based process input. It supplies silicate chemistry without the dry handling and dissolution stage required for solid sodium silicate.

Typical Applications

• Inorganic binder systems: Used in foundry molds, cores and other selected mineral-bonding applications. Setting converts the soluble silicate into a binding phase that holds the particulate material together.
• Industrial detergent builders: Used in alkaline cleaning formulations to contribute alkalinity, soil dispersion and support for metal-surface protection in suitable systems. It works alongside surfactants rather than replacing their interfacial cleaning action.
• Silica and silicate manufacture: Used as a soluble silica feedstock for precipitated silica, gels and related products. Controlled downstream conversion establishes particle structure and the final material form.
