Benzyl alcohol

Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol used as a solvent, formulation modifier and chemical intermediate in industrial products. It dissolves a range of organic ingredients and can reduce viscosity in compatible resin and additive systems. Its hydroxyl group also allows conversion into benzyl esters and other derivatives, giving it a separate role as a reactive feedstock.

The technical grade is a clear, relatively low-volatility liquid. In epoxy systems it is commonly used as a nonreactive diluent or carrier, rather than assumed to become part of the resin network. Its balance of aromatic and hydroxyl functionality supports compatibility with selected organic phases. This industrial material is scoped for technical formulations, with pharmaceutical and cosmetic grades treated as separate specifications.

Typical Applications

• Epoxy curing-agent formulations: Used as a solvent and viscosity modifier in compatible amine-based epoxy hardener systems. It helps distribute the ingredients and improves handling of the formulated liquid.
• Industrial cleaning formulations: Used in selected solvent blends for metal and process-surface cleaning. Its solvency supports removal of organic residues in formulations designed around the relevant substrate and soil.
• Benzyl derivative manufacture: Used as a starting alcohol for benzyl esters and other specialty chemicals. The hydroxyl function provides the conversion site while the benzyl group is carried into the resulting molecule.
