Chemical Product Description & Applications

Sodium carbonate, commonly called soda ash, is an alkaline inorganic salt used as a glass-batch flux and a source of sodium oxide. In glass manufacture it helps lower the temperature needed to form a workable melt from silica-containing raw materials. In aqueous processes it also supplies alkalinity and reacts with selected metal ions to form insoluble carbonates.

The dense grade has granular particles and a higher bulk density than light soda ash. These physical characteristics are particularly useful in glass-batch handling because they help limit dust and segregation relative to much finer powders. Its chemistry remains sodium carbonate, distinct from sodium bicarbonate. The selected grade is introduced as a solid process raw material rather than a ready-made alkaline cleaning solution.

Typical Applications

  • Container glass manufacture: Used in bottle and jar glass batches as a sodium-oxide source and flux. It is blended with silica sand, limestone and other batch components before melting.
  • Flat glass production: Used in soda-lime glass recipes for architectural and automotive sheet glass. The dense granular form supports consistent batch feeding and mixing before the furnace.
  • Sodium silicate manufacture: Used as an alkali source in production of sodium silicate from silica-bearing feedstock. The resulting silicate is subsequently supplied in solid or liquid form for downstream industrial uses.
