Propylene glycol

Propylene glycol is a water-miscible diol used as a solvent, heat-transfer-fluid component and reactive intermediate in industrial manufacture. Its two hydroxyl groups support hydrogen bonding with water and participation in polyester chemistry. In aqueous heat-transfer mixtures it depresses the freezing point, while its solvency helps incorporate selected organic formulation ingredients.

The industrial grade is a clear liquid feedstock, also called monopropylene glycol or 1,2-propanediol. It differs structurally from 1,3-propanediol and from higher propylene glycol oligomers. Neat glycol supplies the base chemical; corrosion inhibitors, buffers and other additives establish the properties of a finished coolant or antifreeze product. Food and pharmaceutical specifications are separate commercial grades.

Typical Applications

• Industrial coolants and antifreezes: Used as a base glycol in formulated heat-transfer liquids. Mixing with water establishes freeze protection, while the finished additive package supplies metal protection and fluid stability.
• Unsaturated polyester resin manufacture: Used as a diol feedstock in polyester synthesis. The hydroxyl groups react into the resin backbone and influence the resulting polymer’s structure and processing behavior.
• Industrial solvent and carrier systems: Used in compatible detergents, coatings and agricultural formulations to carry ingredients and adjust the liquid vehicle. Its water miscibility supports blends containing both aqueous and organic components.
