Decanoic acid

Decanoic acid, also known as capric acid, is a saturated C10 fatty acid used as a feedstock for specialty esters and other oleochemicals. Its carboxyl group enables ester and salt formation, while the medium-length hydrocarbon chain supplies lipophilic character. This combination allows downstream products to be designed for lubrication, emolliency and controlled fluidity.

The acid can be crystalline or molten depending on temperature and is commonly processed through a heated liquid stage. It is chemically distinct from mixed caprylic-capric acid cuts, which contain a broader C8/C10 distribution. The selected industrial grade supplies a defined decanoic-acid contribution for conversion into finished ingredients rather than the performance of a preformed triglyceride or lubricant ester.

Typical Applications

• Polyol ester lubricants: Used as a fatty-acid component in esterification with selected polyols. The C10 chain contributes to the viscosity and low-temperature behavior of the resulting synthetic lubricant ester.
• Personal-care ester manufacture: Used as a chemical feedstock for emollient esters and related oil-phase ingredients. Conversion with the selected alcohol or polyol establishes the final ingredient’s spreading and sensory profile.
• Medium-chain glyceride production: Used as a C10 acid input in manufacture of designed glyceride mixtures. Its proportion relative to other fatty-acid inputs determines the resulting chain-length distribution.
