Tetrasodium pyrophosphate anhydrous

Tetrasodium pyrophosphate, abbreviated TSPP, is an alkaline condensed phosphate used as a builder, sequestrant and dispersant in industrial formulations. It binds calcium and magnesium ions, helping reduce their interference with cleaning. Its interaction with mineral particles also promotes dispersion and can reduce flocculation in suitable aqueous suspensions.

The anhydrous technical powder dissolves to give an alkaline phosphate solution. It is chemically different from sodium acid pyrophosphate, which is used for acidic leavening behavior, and from sodium tripolyphosphate, which contains a longer phosphate chain. TSPP contributes hardness control, alkalinity and suspension behavior; surfactants provide the separate interfacial action in a detergent system.

Typical Applications

• Industrial detergent builders: Used in powdered or dissolved cleaning systems to bind hardness ions and support detergent action. Its alkaline contribution also helps establish the cleaning environment.
• Ceramic and mineral slurries: Used as a dispersing additive in compatible clay and mineral suspensions. Deflocculation helps reduce particle association and can improve flow at a given solids content.
• Metal-cleaning formulations: Used in selected alkaline process cleaners as a phosphate builder and soil-dispersion aid. It works with surfactants and other builders to help detach and carry away process residues.
