Cyclopentane

Cyclopentane is a volatile cyclic hydrocarbon used as a physical blowing agent in rigid polyurethane foam. It vaporizes as the reacting foam mixture heats, generating gas that expands the cellular structure. The retained cell gas also contributes to thermal insulation because its heat conductivity is lower than that of air.

The high-purity liquid is incorporated into a compatible foam formulation rather than chemically generating gas through decomposition. Polyol compatibility, cell stabilization and the overall formulation determine foam expansion and cell structure. Cyclopentane can be used alone or as part of a designed blowing-agent blend; the blend composition and finished foam structure establish insulation performance and dimensional behavior.

Typical Applications

• Refrigerator and freezer insulation: Used to produce rigid polyurethane foam within appliance insulation cavities. Physical expansion fills the cavity, while the closed-cell foam and retained blowing agent support thermal insulation.
• Insulated panels: Used in suitable polyurethane panel systems for building and cold-chain applications. The foam formulation converts the liquid blowing agent into a cellular gas phase during panel production.
• Pipe and technical insulation: Used in selected rigid-foam systems for pipes and other insulated components. It contributes physical expansion and the low-conductivity cell-gas phase of the resulting insulation.
