Sulfuryl chloride

Sulfuryl chloride is a reactive inorganic liquid used as a chlorinating reagent in industrial organic synthesis. It supplies chlorine for conversion of selected aromatic and aliphatic substrates, including activated carbonyl compounds. It also has applications in oxidative chlorination of sulfur-containing intermediates, providing a second route to specialty chemical building blocks.

The formula SO2Cl2 distinguishes sulfuryl chloride from thionyl chloride, SOCl2. The liquid is moisture-reactive and is used in controlled dry chemical processing. Its function is established by the substrate and manufacturing route: aromatic chlorination, formation of chlorinated carbonyl intermediates and sulfur-intermediate conversion use different aspects of its reactivity. It is supplied as a concentrated reagent feedstock for further chemical conversion.

Typical Applications

• Chlorinated aromatic intermediates: Used in manufacture of selected chlorophenol and related aromatic intermediates for specialty chemical and colorant production. It provides the chlorinating input in the established process.
• Chlorinated carbonyl intermediates: Used in selected routes to alpha-chlorinated ketones and related carbonyl compounds. These intermediates supply defined structures for subsequent fine-chemical manufacture.
• Specialty organosulfur intermediates: Used in compatible oxidative chlorination routes involving sulfur-containing substrates. The converted sulfur intermediates are used for further synthesis of specialty chemical products.
