Trimethylolpropane

Trimethylolpropane, abbreviated TMP, is a trifunctional polyol used as a branching and crosslinking building block in resin and ester manufacture. Its three hydroxyl groups provide multiple reaction sites, allowing formation of more highly connected polyester, alkyd and polyurethane structures. Esterification also produces polyol esters used in synthetic lubricant systems.

The industrial solid is commonly supplied as flakes and melted or dissolved for processing. TMP itself is not trimethylolpropane triacrylate: the latter is a separately manufactured acrylate derivative. In resins, TMP changes network architecture through its hydroxyl functionality; in fully esterified products, the selected fatty acids and final ester composition establish viscosity and fluid behavior.

Typical Applications

• Polyester and alkyd resins: Used to introduce branching into liquid or powder-coating polyester and alkyd systems. The additional hydroxyl functionality helps establish the resin structure and its subsequent curing behavior.
• Polyurethane intermediates: Used as a triol in suitable polyurethane and prepolymer formulations. It contributes multiple reaction sites that modify branching and crosslink density.
• Synthetic lubricant esters: Used as the polyol component in TMP ester manufacture. Conversion with selected acids produces ester base fluids for industrial, automotive and other designed lubrication systems.
