2-Naphthol

2-Naphthol is a phenolic aromatic intermediate used in colorant and fine-chemical synthesis. Its activated naphthalene ring participates in azo coupling, while the phenolic hydroxyl group supports ether formation, esterification and related derivatization. The fused aromatic framework contributes the extended conjugation needed in many downstream colorant structures.

The selected material is crystalline beta-naphthol, distinct from the 1-naphthol isomer and from preformed Naphthol AS coupling components. In azo chemistry, it supplies an activated aromatic coupling site; in derivative manufacture, the hydroxyl group provides a separate reaction handle. These transformations convert the raw intermediate into new molecules. Formation of the phenoxide increases oxygen nucleophilicity for suitable alkylation routes.
