2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid solution (50% aqueous)

PBTC is an organophosphonate containing one phosphonic-acid group and three carboxylic-acid groups. It inhibits growth of mineral-scale crystals and complexes suitable metal ions, helping manage deposits in industrial water systems. The combination of phosphonate and carboxylate functionality is especially useful in formulations designed around calcium-scale control.

The selected product is an approximately 50% aqueous acid concentrate for further blending. It is commonly combined with dispersant polymers and corrosion inhibitors rather than treated as an entire cooling-water program. Its threshold-inhibition role means the mechanism is not simply removal of all hardness ions through stoichiometric chelation. Water chemistry and the other ingredients determine the balance of scale control and deposit management.
