Benzoyl chloride

Benzoyl chloride is an aromatic acid chloride used to introduce benzoyl groups into organic molecules. Its reactive acyl function supports formation of benzoate esters and benzamides, while the aromatic ring supplies a defined hydrophobic structural unit. It is also an important feedstock in manufacture of benzoyl peroxide for polymer-related applications.

The technical liquid is colorless to pale yellow and is sensitive to moisture. It is used as a converted intermediate in controlled synthesis, rather than as a finished resin additive or polymerization initiator. The product identity differs from benzyl chloride: benzoyl chloride contains a carbonyl group that gives characteristic acylation chemistry. Downstream reaction partners determine the ester, amide or peroxide product obtained.

Typical Applications

• Benzoyl peroxide manufacture: Used as a benzoyl feedstock for production of benzoyl peroxide. The converted peroxide serves downstream as an initiator in selected polymerization and curing systems.
• Specialty benzoate esters: Used in manufacture of benzoate derivatives where the target structure requires benzoylation of an alcohol-containing intermediate. The resulting esters are used in specialty chemical synthesis.
• Benzamide intermediates: Used to introduce a benzoyl group into amine-containing substrates. This creates benzamide structures for further fine-chemical, colorant or other intermediate manufacture.
